The Beersheba Church of God, Andheria More, 126, Chattarpur, Delhi in collaboration with DNipCare Conducted a Palliative Care Sensitization and mobilization campaign at 11 AM on 29th January 2012 in the Chuch Hall. Mrs. Mariamma Joy coordinated the program. Mr. Jimmi Joseph introduced the team and Pastor Samraj presided over the function. The sensitization presentation was done by Mr. Suresh Thaliyaril, Mr. Ajith Kumar and KV Hamza, the volunteers of DNipCare opened up the volunteering opportunity for all the inhabitants of the area to enter into the Palliation for the patients in the area.

New Delhi, Jan 2 : It has been a year since Shalu left school, and all that the 13-year-old cancer patient can think about these days is going back and joining her friends.

"I am hopeful of getting well soon," says Shalu, who has been admitted at the Delhi State Cancer Institute for the last six months.

Unlike most people at the hospital, including the staff and families of patients, Shalu never stops smiling even under the unending array of pills, syrups and injections.

This New Year's day bought some more joy to Shalu and her fellow patients when a small celebration was organised at the hospital.

Another cancer patient Babli, in her 30s, has found new inspiration here.

Hailing from Bihar and abandoned by her family after she was diagnosed with cancer, Babli says: "This celebration is giving me a new strength to live with happiness as long as I live. I want to get better as soon as possible so that I can meet my children."

Life has been an emotional roller-coaster ride for Rafiq-Ul-Ansari, a native of Assam, whose younger sister Dilruba Begum has been diagnosed with brain tumour.

"My sister has brain tumour. We have not gone home for the last eight months, but I hope the coming year would bring in happiness and good health for her," said Ansari, whose sister could not attend the celebration due to her critical condition.

Bringing a streak of happiness into the patients' lives, the celebration was organised by NGO Delhites' National Initiative in Palliative Care (DNipCare), which also distributed blankets to the patients and their families.

"The event will be used as an occasion to create awareness on palliation for all volunteers and well-wishers and also to begin the year by providing some solace to the lives of the patients," DNipCare's general secretary K. V. Hamza said. (IANS)

Sensitization and mobilization campaign at 11 AM on 26th November 2011
in Ansari Auditorium, Jamia Millia Islamia University. Prof. V.M.
Habeebul Rahman coordinated and Ms. Sumitra presided over the program.
Different aspects of Palliative Care and its efficacy in the
metropolitan city was taught to the students of social work by KV
Hamza, the General Secretary of DNipCare through a detailed
presentation. More than 50 students attended the campaign to learn
and understand Palliative Care. Experience sharing and question
answer session were handled by volunteers like Miss Adila, Miss Neerja
Bakshi, the students, Mrs. Aparna PS, Mr. Ajith Kumar and Mr. Suresh
Thaliyaril, volunteers of DNipCare. A Palliative Unit jointly managed
by the Social Service Club of Jamia Millia Islamia University and
DNipCare has been constituted for rendering Palliative care to the
long term bedridden terminally ill patients of in and around Jamia
Millia University area. The enthusiastic and committed student
volunteers in groups have conducted Palliative home care visits also
in the afternoon after the conclusion of the campaign. It has also
been decided that the Palliative Care group will explore the potential
of students and disseminate the discipline to the students of other
Universities and educational institutions.

The theme decided by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare for this year is Non-Communicable Diseases. DNipCare volunteers will, therefore, propagate on prevention, early detection, curative methods and Palliative care required for patients suffering from Non-Communicable diseases like Cancer, paralytic stroke etc and end up in bedridden stage.

DNipCare celebrated World Hospice & Palliative Care Day 2011 on 8th October 2011 in M.P's Club, South Avenue, New Delhi. The Chief Guest for the program was Shri T.K.A.Nair, Adviser to Prime Minister. Other distinguished guests were: Shri Wajahat Habibullah, Chairman, National Commission for Minorities, Prof. Omcherry NN Pillai, Director, Bal Bhawan, Mrs. Elizabeth Antony, President Navoothan Charitable Trust, Shri Madhavan Nair, Trustee, SriKrishna Medical Trust, Dr. R.K. Grover, Director, Delhi State Cancer Institute, Dr. Abdul Mannan, Joint Director, Delhi State Cancer Institute. Prof. Omcherry NN Pillai presided over the function. Ms. Shalini Narayanan and Ms. Neerja Bakshi anchored and coordinated the celebration.

The program started at 5.30 PM with the remembrance for the departed souls from the Palliative family of DNipCare after the World Day 2010. Candles were lighted in the memory of all these Palliative family members by the volunteers who cared them most when they were alive and ailing. While inaugurating the program Shri TKA Nair stressed the necessity of developing community volunteers to render Palliative Care to the ailing patients. Public donation boxes for private enterprises and public institutions have also been inaugurated by Shri T K A Nair by handing over the first donation box to Mr. Rafi, representative of M/s EMK Group. Prof. Omcherry NN Pillai handed over a donation box to Shri Jamaludin KM for placing strategically in his Hiba Exports for the public to donate. Shri Madhavan Nair received a donation box from Shri TK A Nair for placing it in the Kartiayani Auditorium in Mayur Vihar Phase 1. Inaugurating the donation cans for homes, Shri Wajahat Habeebullah handed over a can to Shri Balachandra Menon. Shri Ashok Mehra received a can from Shri Madhavan Nair.
The second session of Open forum for doctors, nurses, volunteers, patients and their families was started by Dr. Suresh K Mohammed and speech on cancer, its prevention and curative methods were explained in detail by Dr. R.K. Grover, Director, Delhi State Cancer Institute. Volunteers shared their experiences of rendering palliation to the patients in their area. Some of the patients present have also participated in the discussion to know more about the care and shared their experiences with the palliative volunteers of DNipCare.
The session was followed by showcasing of in-house art and cultural talents of the volunteers and well wishers of DNipCare. The spectators enjoyed the atmosphere of songs, music and different ethnic dance forms presented by members of this Palliative family under DNipCare. The program ended at 8.30 PM with light refreshments.

World Hospice and Palliative Care Day is a unified day of action to celebrate and support hospice and palliative care around the world. The theme for World Day 2011 with Voices for Hospices which will take place on October 8 2011 is "Many diseases, many lives, many voices - palliative care for non-communicable conditions".
This year’s theme will focus on how people living with conditions which are not infectious, can benefit from palliative care.
In addition to volunteers, experts from medical and paramedical fields, eminent people from all walks of life and some of our Palliative patients are also expected to participate in the program.

The Palliative Care especially in the metropolis of Delhi will be discussed
in detail by the experts and policy planners including people from high echelons of
bureaucracy and politics.

Open Forum : 6.00 PM
During this session, the patients and their carers will be provided an opportunity to interact freely
with volunteers, palliative experts and policy planners and air their concerns and issues pertaining to the illness.

Cultural Eve : 7.00 PM
The in-house musical and cultural talents of volunteers, patients and participating well wishers will be showcased in this session to enthrall the audience.

We, the volunteers of DNipCare celebrated Indian Independence Day celebration with Cancer Patients under the theme “Freedom from Pain”.

A Palliative Care sensitization program was held in the Charitable Clinic, Shri Ayyappa Temple, Dilshad Garden, Delhi where more than 150 people participated. Prof. Omcherry NN Pillai inaugurated the program. Shri Ramachandran Pillai, President, Ayyappa Seva Samiti presided over the function and declared that Ayyappa Seva Samiti will ardently involve in providing Palliative Care to the patients in Dilshad Garden area in close association with DNipCare. Dr. K.R. Grover, Director, Delhi State Cancer Institute was the Chief Guest of the program. Palliative Care sensitization with emphasize on Geriatric care especially in the growing urban nuclear family scenario was done by KV Hamza, General Secretary, DNipCare. Shalini Narayan, Psychologist spoke at length on the woes and issues of care givers and long term, bedridden terminally ill patients. Antony Cyriac summed up the sensitization session with focus on the necessity of the outreach of Palliative Care to the masses and the requirement of committed volunteers to carry on the mission. Dr. KR Grover highlighted the Cancer scenario in India vis-à-vis developed countries and the immediate and imminent paradigm shift required in the approach and attitude of the people towards cancer and cancer patients. He appreciated the services being provided by DNipCare since its inception and also their association with Delhi State Cancer Institute for the last 1 ½ years in providing Palliation to the hapless cancer patients. Shri Sachidanand, the eminent Malayalam writer was the Guest of honour and declared his commitment and solidarity with Palliative Care movement to provide succor to the ailing patients.
Under “Freedom from Pain campaign” of DNipCare, the entire audience after the sensitization session walked down to Delhi State Cancer Institute and celebrated Independence Day with Cancer Patients. Fruit juices were also distributed to the patients admitted in the institute and also for those who are staying in Sir Soba Singh Dharamshala, adjacent to the Cancer Institute, while exchanging pleasantries. “I have attended 40 years Independence Day celebrations in Government set up and now a patient in Cancer Institute, but feel delighted to celebrate it here too with enthusiastic volunteers of DNipCare” fervently said a retired Government official, now admitted in the Institute for cancer treatment, while exchanging pleasantries with the volunteers.

In association with the Ayyappa Sewa Samiti, Dilshad Garden, DNipCare is organizing a “Cancer Prevention & Early Detection and Palliative Care sensitization campaign” at 10 AM on Independence Day, the 15th August 2011 in the Charitable Clinic of Shri Ayyappa Temple, R Pocket, Dilshad Garden, Delhi. The campaign will focus on the aspect of prevention and early detection of cancer especially in view of the ever increasing carcinogens in the atmosphere and change in life style of the people. The session will be handled by voluntary doctors of DNipCare. The volunteers of DNipCare through their experience sharing session will sensitize the audience on the efficacy of Palliative Care for not only the long term bedridden and terminally ill patients but to the elders in their twilight years in the metropolis of Delhi where the population is predominantly of nuclear families. Eminent people from all walks of life are expected to participate in the campaign.

Further, as a sequel to the year 2010’s “Freedom from Pain Campaign”, the volunteers and well wishers of DNipCare will celebrate Indian Independence Day this year also with the ailing Cancer Patients of Delhi State Cancer Institute, Dilshad Garden. Patients admitted in the hospital as well as those staying in the adjacent Sir Soba Singh Dharamshala will be visited by the volunteers and fruit juices distributed along with exchanging pleasantries as a part of the Independence Day celebrations and try to curb the emotional isolation they are going through without any festivals and festivities due to the advent of their disease.

All are requested to participate in the program, declare solidarity with “Freedom from Pain Campaign” and celebrate Independence Day with Cancer patients for whom festivals and festivities are taboo while entangled in the Chemo, Radio therapies and surgeries mingled with the advent of emotional isolation on deteriorating physical conditions and demoralizing mental agonies.

What is it all about?

Yesterday 30th July, it was really a sultry Saturday, and I received a telephone call from Mrs. Varghese when I was driving back after visiting two ailing patients in Tilak Nagar and Mohan Garden with Mr. Sunil Gupta. It was totally a desperate cry for help from Mrs. Varghese as nobody was available with her for taking her to hospital to relieve her from the excruciating pain she was undergoing due to the portal vein hypertension and liver cirrhosis she is suffering from. My immediate instinct was to call up three of our stalwart volunteers of Palliative care teams as I was sure of not able to reach her from the far away Dwarka where I was then.

Last time when the same kind of pain started it was the broad day time and we all were in our offices and she had to resort to calling on 100, the ever busy Delhi Police, who courteously took her in their ambulance to the hospital and admitted her in emergency. We then felt the limitations of our palliative care movement that if the pain occurs to the patients on a week day, that too during office hours, we are helpless as our volunteership is confined to weekends and evenings of week days only.

Few to and fro call to them and Mr. Kumar was already out on road in Andrews Ganj looking for a taxi or auto to take Mrs. Varghese from Sunlight Colony to the Emergency ward of Safdarjung Hospital. It was understood that Mr. Abdul from Lodhi Colony had also started to the hospital by then after coordinating with Mr. Kumar. The bemoaning Mrs. Varghese was finally in the hospital, doctors promptly attended to her and administered pain killer injections calming her down in the emergency ward. Kumar and Abdul were still there in the hospital and by the time they finally left for their houses with a quite hope that Mrs. Varghese has been provided with a quick relief for the time being leaving her to the treatment and care of the good and always overworked doctors of Safdarjung hospital, one more hour had already passed after the calendar date of the day silently slipped into 31st July.

What is it all about? Are we doing social human care or Palliative Care? Abdul and Kumar are not medical professionals, but pen pushing Government officers who could have sat in the air conditioned comforts of their homes in this sultry day, but had already visited patients, provided monthly food rations, emotional support etc., wherever required during the day time on Saturday with other dedicated team members and took up further ordeal at 10 PM in the evening again.

So far we do not have the teams led by our own medical doctor and nurse, but definitely has the advantage of having few good hearted doctors and nurses coming with us voluntarily whenever they are free from their own working fields. We also do not have any vehicle of our own to take these doctor, nurse and volunteers to our patients spread all over Delhi or for patient transport. Be we gratefully thank Mr. E. Sreedharan for starting Metro rail as we resort to it for most of the travelling though we have to catch buses or cycle rikshas for destinations beyond Metro stations. None of our volunteers ever seen cribbing on these meager methods of transport we resort to even when the travelling charges are paid by themselves as the donations we receive are used solely on the patient care and not on overheads.

It is for the common public to scrutinize our mission in whichever form we may put it and also to see whether the patient has been benefited in any manner or not. Hope our patients and their families, for whom it may matter, may also decide what it is all about, a Social or Palliative Care.

6% of Kerala population suffers from mental illness: CAG report

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A performance audit by the Comptroller and Auditor General of India has concluded that Kerala, where 5.86% of the population suffers from mental illness, compared with the national average of 2%, is precariously perched in the mental health care sector.
The Kerala government is yet to formulate a plan to implement the objectives of the Mental Health Policy of 2000, the report, which was tabled in the Assembly on Tuesday.
The report said the state was one of the leading consumers of alcohol and that it had a suicide rate of 25.2 per lakh population against the national average of 10 lakh.
The government hasn't conducted an "epidemiological survey to identify mentally-ill people in the state as recommended by the National Human Rights Commission", it said. "Non-utilization of central funds, inadequate infrastructure facilities, shortage of manpower and inadequate monitoring of mental health care facilities," are the other shortfalls pointed out by the report.
Between 2005 and 2010, when the Left Democratic Front government was in power, the state received Rs 9.98 crore from the Centre for mental health care facilities of which Rs 4.07 crore remained unutilised as of March 2010. The entire money was shown as utilised but the anomaly came to light in the audit.
The report dwelt on the role of the State Mental Health Authority (SMHA), which is mandated to advise the government on all matters of mental health. Between 2005 and 2010, the SMHA sent proposals for starting diploma courses in psychiatric nursing in the Medical College Hospital here besides rehabilitation centres under district panchayats and for increasing the staff strength for starting impatient treatment in the new phsyiatric ward of the MCH here. But the state government had not acted on any of these proposals as on August 2010, the report observed.

We, the volunteers of DNipCare met the patient tonight and managed to establish his identity through lengthy interaction that he is belonging to Ambayapuly House, Kodakkal, Tirunnavaya in Malappuram District of Kerala. We also could get links to his family and contacted his cousin Mr. Abdul Latheef over telephone. He has agreed to send his family members to Delhi to take home the patient from Delhi. In the meanwhile, he is getting a very good care in Akasha Paravakal, the home for unidentified, unattended, discarded ailing psychic patients.

DNipCare conducted the Palliative Care monthly review meeting in Kerala Club, New Delhi and also Candle Light Memorial for AIDS victims today, i.e., 14th May 2011. Discusions were held about the patients especially bedridden, terminally ill patients being cared by DNipCare.

Candle Light Memorial for AIDS victims was started internationally in 1983 and being observed by groups all over the world during the third week of May. Comemorating the occasion, Dr. Nabeel of the UN AIDS and the National Coordinator for Candle Light Memorial lighted the candles.

Ms. Tapati Dutta working with the International AIDS Vaccine Inititative (IAVI), Ms. Sumitha Chalil of NACO etc disseminated information on care for AIDS patients. Detailed discussions were held on different aspects of ailing AIDS patients and also on the preventive methods. Shri A.T. Sainudin, President of DNipCare chaired the meeting.

With profound grief we have to inform all that one of our Palliative Volunteers, Mr. Suresh Kumar, Director in Ministry of Earth Science succumbed to the Cancer (Spindle Cell sarcoma) disease he was suffering from since last 6 months. He died at 6.30 PM today, i.e., 19.04.2011 in Ahamedabd, Gujarat, where he was undergoing treatment for Cancer.

He was always a very good friend and inspiration for all of us. We all will miss him very badly always. Let us all pray for the departed soul to rest in peace.

With profound grief we have to inform everybody that Mrs. Mankumari, one of our Palliative Patients died at 4 PM today, i.e., 14th April 2011 in her native place in Nepal where she went to spend her last days with her children.

We express our deep hearted condolences to the bereaved family.

We are grateful to Dr. K.S. Manoj, former MP and Anaesthatist and Mr. Suresh Thaliyaril, Male Nurse for visiting Mrs. Mankumari at her home and hospital and giving pain relief when she was in dire need of it while suffering from Cancer and staying in Delhi. Mrs. Molly and Mrs. Valsamma, both nurses, along with our other volunteers were also of extreme help in providing solace to this patient.

Noble Thinking & Great Deed

One of our ardent volunteers under DNipCare just telephoned to find
whether there is any blood donation requirement as on date
for any of our patients because he wanted to donate blood again.

He was confirming that he has completed three months period
after his last blood donation to one of our patients.
We do keep a note of our blood donation and receipt account also
in the Finance and Accounts Management section of our website
and my immediate instinct was to check his last date.
I called him back to inform that he had donated on 18th December only
and today is just 18th March.
Hearing the previous date he was very happy to reaffirm that
today is 18, he can give again and going to give tomorrow
to somebody requested for in NOIDA.
To that commitment I had nothing to say,
but wish him all the best and ask him to take care.

Oh!!! A second thought came to the mind.
Between December and March,
the very small February with 28 days was also there.
So our perceived 90 days for three months might not have been completed by today.
The calculative mind with accounts back ground worked out the total days
to find that our Good Samaritan was not only great in his deeds
and mind but ample clear in his thought processes as well.

Hats off to you Haridasan Sir !!!!!!

Master Umran, the 10 year old boy in Faridabad who was suffering from blood cancer died today, 18th February 2011 and left to the painless world. Let us all pray for the departed soul.

A divergent way of Celebrating Republic Day

After seeing the military might, valor and the exhibition of scientific and technological developments, diverse cultural ethos etc., of our great Nation on the long stretch of Rajpath for more than two hours, the immediate mood was to enjoy the holiday on Republic Day by a long slumber. But as Territorial Army soldier can never sit idle when the war is broken, the Palliative Care volunteer can hardly stop thinking about his family members, the great Palliative family especially when they are ailing and feeling emotional isolation. Few telephone calls here and there and Samaritans including our ever young at heart Mr. O D Sharma Sir, the most committed veteran for social causes and ailing patients, reached well on time in Sir Soba Singh Dharamshala attached with Delhi State Cancer Institute to celebrate Indian Republic Day with the ailing cancer patients.
Mr. Nahid at the counter informed that few patients have already left for their homes due to holiday and the remaining were around 30 only. Few new patients, whom we have not met last time, were taken aback on seeing the DNipCare volunteers heading towards their beds with passion in hearts and broad smile on faces. “Amma, we are working in Delhi and came just to see you on our holiday. As you belong to far away Nainital your relatives may not be able to visit you frequently and so we are here as your relatives and friends”, the brief introduction by any one of us was enough to melt the ice. The stories of their physical and emotional pains started flowing along with the droplets of tears. A sigh of relief, a moment of contentment at being with, interacting with and holding the hand of us, that is DNipCare, as depicted on our emblem.

Small juice packets distributed by us might or might not have given the feeling of sweetness to the tongues of patients being fed through Rhyles tubes. But we surely felt sweetness in our heart, when the blind cancer patient recollected DNipCare volunteers and asked for Madhu, who interacted with him last time also; when the liver cancer patient who evaded us and asked to talk to his brother instead at the beginning melt down, copied ghazals of Pankaj Udhas to his mobile from us and was requesting us to continue coming and interacting with him; when we saw the relief felt by a patient on getting tender care from Ansil and Ajith when he was lying unattended alone in his room after a fall from bed. These were the very little things we could attempt in the name of celebrating Republic Day for these ailing cancer patients. Can it all be called care or Palliative Care? We do not know, but we try and hope to continue striving as far as we are able to stand on our two legs.

Our Samaritans for this mission were Narayanan Kutty, Raghavan, O.D. Sharma, Som Nathan, Ansil, Atul Pandey, Ajith Kumar, Antony Cyriac, Madhu, Shaikh Moideen and a lot many volunteers who truly wished us from the core of their hearts but could not be present there due to unavoidable circumstances.

Sad demise of two member of our Palliative Family

The first month of 2011 took away two of our Palliative family members. Mr. Animon of Kayamkulam, Kerala died on 6th January 2011. Mrs. Bharati of Dilshad Garden, Delhi died on 22nd January 2011. We the volunteers of DNipCare, condole the untimely and sad demise of these two members of our Palliative family and pray for the departed souls.

A Care so whole for body and soul,
When pain and suffering, take their toll,
Can we underestimate the team’s role?
Making the patient’s comfort their sole goal

With limits for cure, but nil for care,
We are called to love and share,
We give and take, bless and bear,
‘We have limits’ Can we speak and dare?

Pain and suffering misery and sorrow,
The lot of those who live in time they borrow
With a life limiting illness this their plight
It behooves us to help them with all our might

Morphine and syringe drivers are they all?
To those for whom pain may befall
Shouldn’t we understand ‘Total Pain’?
To uplift many as they go on memory’s lane.

‘To live with hope and in dignity to die’
Is what we give before the patient’s last sigh
Giving all a ‘good death’ they deserve

A reach out program to cater to the patients in Dilshad Garden Area

A meeting was held by Shri Shaikh Moideen in Dilshad Garden today, i.e., 5th December 2010 to explore the possibility of reaching out the Palliative Care program of DNipCare to the patients in and around Dilshad Garden, Delhi in addition to the patients staying in Sir Soba Singh Dharamshala, GTB Hospital Complex.

Mr.Vishwanathan, Mr. Raghavan, Mr. Somanathan, Mr. Narayanan Kutty, Ms. Shalini Narayanan, Mr. Ansil, Mr. Aneesh, Mr. Nazaruddin, Mr. Ajith Kumar, Mr. PP Abdul Khalik, Dr. MM Kunju & K.V. Hamza were present. It is agreed upon by all that beginning with the patient visits in the Sir Soba Singh Dharamshala, the volunteers in Dilshad Garden will further identify the patients requiring Palliative Care in and around Dilshad Garden and follow them up with the active support of the existing volunteers of DNipCare. It is expected that a real potential group will be groomed from this area for this true human care for the debilitating patients.

Palliative Care First Time in India International Trade Fair

Honourable Union Minister appreciated DNipCare by his jotting down in the Visitor's book like this "I am extremely happy the way DNipCare is providing home to home service. I wish the organization best of luck". It is the first time in the history of India International Trade Fair that Palliative Care concept has been given a chance to propagate to the masses. Deepavali - Festival of Lights celebrated with Cancer Patients

Today is Deepavali, festival of lights. But we, the volunteers of DNipCare, thought to try and light up the hearts of a few patients remaining there today in Sir Soba Singh Dharamshala attached with the Delhi State Cancer Hospital, GTB Hospital Complex, Dilshad Garden, Delhi. When majority of the patients went home to celebrate Deepavali these few could not as either they were to carry on with Chemotherapy, Radiotherapy or not able to afford to and fro journey due to one or the other reason.
Shahjahana cannot speak due to throat cancer, but her eyes express thousand lights of Deepavali for all of us. Ramakant Pandey speaks eloquently, fighting cancer vehemently and at the same time describing the disease as his better half to be with him always. Shamshad Ali speaks of talookath and taboon to be the strongest rings of the chain of belief as Prophet said. We learn always, still much to learn of the intricacies of human life through the lens of Palliative Care.
We visited these patients belonging to far flung areas, taken the role of their kith and kin, who seldom come for them, tried to cheer them up and to be their own. Pain, solitude, physical and mental agonies, everything gives them company, but what is required from us is little moments of concern and care, a few words of us convincing that we are with them.
Also as a token of our concern and affection we provided them from DNipCare our Deepavali gifts, the innerwear to withstand the forthcoming winter. Antony Cyriac Sir and Ajith Kumar Sir with their passion to render care for patients were the other team members for this fruitful visit.

Mrs. Kavita passed away

We are very sad to inform that Mrs. Kavita (47) of Palam Colony, Delhi, who was suffering from Breast Cancer died at 6.30 PM today, i.e., 24th October 2010 at her home. A person with full of confidence and courage to fight the killer disease also succumbed finally. Despite their economic conditions her educational background helped her children to reach at par excellence. Let us all wish enough strength to her family comprising two sons and husband to cope up with their crucial loss of their beloved.

Molly Lawrence bid farewell to this world

With profound grief we are to inform everybody that Mrs. Molly Lawrence, one of the most loved members of our Palliative family bid farewell to this world today, 16th October 2010. She had been suffering from cancer, and came in association with DNipCare’s Palliative family since 26th October 2008. The young, brave and lovely lady had the hope and desire to live, but the disease did not spare her. We the volunteers fondly remember her and also the beautiful devotional song she kept as the ringtone of her mobile. Let us all mourn and pray for the departed soul and wish adequate strength to her bereaved family comprising husband and daughter to cope up with their loss.

World Hospice & Palliative Care Day celebrated on 16th October 2010

We the volunteers of DNipCare celebrated the World Hospice & Palliative Care Day on 16th October 2010 Saturday. Shri T.K.A. Nair, Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister was the Chief Guest for the celebration. The program started with a condolence for the 13 departed souls of our Palliative Family since celebration of World Hospice & Palliative Care Day on 10th October 2009. However, we were shocked to receive the news of death of Mrs. Molly Lawrence before conclusion of the condolence and with great pain in heart we had been compelled to light yet another candle for the most loved member of our Palliative family. An open forum for the patients, carers, volunteer and doctors was held wherein the patients and their relatives described their plight on falling ill and the support received by them from DNipCare in their most difficult time. Dr. Suresh K Mohammed moderated the discussions of Open Forum wherein the patients and their families aired their views on the lack of facilities for the Palliative patients and their care givers within the Government Medical Health Care system. Shri A.T. Sainudin, President, DNipcare welcomed the dignitaries and the audience. He expressed the necessity of having a premise for the organization to carry out its programmes smoothly for the benefits of the patients. Shri T.K. A Nair inaugurated the website www.dnipcare.org of the organization and highlighted the efficacy of rendering Palliative Care. He has also requested to all volunteers for supporting the organization in its mission of providing succor to the ailing patients. Dr. Rafeeq Zakaria of Care India, Sister Sofi of Shanti Avedna Sadan, Prof. Omcherry NN Pillai of Bharatiya Vidya Bhawan, Mr. Arun Sharma, Addl. CGA(Retd), Mr. C. Chandran, President Delhi Malayali Association felicitated the activities of this mission. The identity cards were issued to the volunteers in order to facilitate their interaction with the patients more pragmatic. Along with patient care, DNipCare believes in inculcating the Palliative culture to one and all through its campaigns and to make such campaigns more effective a LCD Projector and screen have been donated by Shri Sanjeev Munjal to the organization. Prof. Omcherry N N Pillai received the projector on behalf of DNipCare with gratitude. The car stickers proudly saying that ‘I care for ailing patients and I am a DNipCarian’ was also released as a part of the campaigning mode of DNipCare. Mr. K.V.Hamza, General Secretary of DNipCare said the vote of thanks to the participants of the program. He has also informed that Shri T.K.A. Nair gave a promise to try and help the organization in obtaining a premise for carrying out its day-today Palliative Care activities in Delhi.
