Delhi State Chapter of Indian Association of Palliative Care

Inaugural ceremony on 15th April 2023 at AIIMS, New Delhi

 

On 15th April, 2023 Delhi state chapter of Indian Association of Palliative Care (IAPC) was formally inaugurated at Dr. Ramalingaswami Board Room, AIIMS, New Delhi.

The ceremony was conducted in the august presence of Dr. Sushma Bhatnagar (Chief, Dr. B.R.A IRCH, AIIMS & President, IAPC), Dr. Gowri Nambiar Sengupta (Deputy Director General, Public Health, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India), Dr. Seema Mishra (Prof, IRCH AIIMS New Delhi and Organising Secretary for the event), Dr. Sachidanand Jee Bharati (Prof , IRCH, AIIMS New Delhi and Joint Secretary for the event) along with the participation of more than  100 delegates and well-wishers. Dr Sushma Bhatnagar  highlighted the progress in the field of Palliative Medicine in the country over past few years and the various initiatives taken by Indian Association of Palliative Medicine to promote the welfare of patients and the society. Dr. Gowri Nambiar Sengupta made the gathering aware regarding the various initiatives taken by Government of India in the field of Palliative Care and ensured that she would continue to extend her support for the same. Thereafter, Prof. Seema Mishra presented the mission and vision report of Delhi state chapter of IAPC . The vison is to form a Delhi State Palliative Care Policy which will be based on capacity building, drug availability, education and advocacy of palliative care. Prof. Seema Mishra unveiled the logo of state chapter. The logo was prepared by Dr Kinshuki Jain, Dr Seema Mishra and Dr Sachidanand Bharti with the help graphic artist Mr Abhinav (Founder- “Rakshas”) and Mr. Mukul Verma (The feelings that a deeply touched patient) of palliative care emoted as words, formed the motto of the organization- “Service- Sensitivity- Support”.

Prof. Sachidanand had presentation regarding various activities ( various CME, case discussion and annual meeting of the IAPC Delhi Chapter etc. ) planned by Delhi State Chapter in the coming year.

An interesting panel discussion on ‘Various Palliative Care delivery models, their challenges and possible solutions’ was organised on the occasion. The panel discussion was chaired by Prof. Sushma Bhatnagar, Prof. Sunil Kumar (Professor, Department of Surgical Oncology, AIIMS, New Delhi) and Dr. Bimla Sharma ( Head, Palliative Medicine; Senior Consultant & Vice Chairperson, Sir Gangaram Hospital, New Delhi and was moderated by Prof. Seema Mishra. There were thirteen expert professionals {Dr. Saveena G Raheja (VMMV and Safdarjung Hospital), Dr. PN Shivpriya (ABVIMS and RML Hospital), Dr. Nishkarsh Gupta ( AIIMS, Delhi), Dr. Vinod Kumar (AIIMS, Delhi), Dr. Megha Pruthi (FMRI, Gurugram), Dr. Kinshuki Jain (RGCI, Delhi), Dr. Gaurav Chanana (Max Hospital, Saket), Dr. S. Khanna (Dharamshila Rahat Medical Center), Dr. Ashu Jain (Artemis Hospital, Gurugram), Dr. Puneet Rathore (Sir Ganagaram Hospital), Dr. Ravinder Mohan (CanSupport), Dr. Amita Mahajan (CanKids) and Mr. KV Hamza (DNip)} offered their support by joining the event as panellists.

Panellists talked about the different models of palliative care delivery they follow at their institutions such as hospital based, community based, home based and integrative model.

Panellists also highlighted the challenges they have encountered while setting up the palliative care services. They mentioned that challenges were mainly at four levels- personal level (lack of knowledge, awareness and attitude), health system level (lack of training courses), organizational level (lack of manpower, lack of access to essential drugs such as opioids) and at policy level (lack of funds and insurance policies supporting the needs of patients requiring palliative care). At the end of panel discussion, it was concluded by Dr Seema Mishra that every one of us have to work together at all fronts ( Institutions, Private sectors and community level) so we can improve palliative care at primary level, secondary level and tertiary level Dr Sushma Bhatnagar has ensured everyone that being IAPC president, she will continue her support to improve the palliative care at all levels

Thereafter, Dr. Sachidanand J Bharati and Dr Rakesh Garg, the enthusiastic quiz masters conducted a riveting quiz for the Junior and Senior Residents in Palliative Medicine from across the city, after the panel discussion.

The CME concluded successfully with the dignitaries, the faculty members and the delegates highlighting the positive impact of Palliative Medicine in rendering quality care for their chronically / terminally ill patients, along with a pledge to make palliative medicine a much sought after specialty in the years to come. Everyone present appreciated the efforts taken by the team led by Prof. Sushma Bhatnagar and Prof. Seema Mishra to launch the Delhi state Chapter of IAPC. All the faculty members (Dr Brajesh , Dr Sauarbh, Dr Raghav Gupta, Dr Balbir, Dr Prashant and Dr Shweta ) and residents of  department of Onco-anaesthesia and Palliative Medicine , IRCH, AIIMS were involved in conducting this meeting.
