Palliative Care sensitization & Cancer Awareness Programme

Introduction
The Palliative Care and Cancer Awareness Programme was organized by Smriti Palliative Care
Unit, functioning under the Smriti Malayali Fraternity, at the Seminar Room of the Department
of Social Work, Jamia Millia Islamia. The event began at 3:00 PM with a warm and meaningful
atmosphere dedicated to awareness, compassion, and care.
Programme Proceedings
1. Introduction to Smrithy Palliative Care
The programme commenced with a brief and informative introduction delivered by
Ms. Siyana Siyad, In-charge of Smriti Palliative Care Unit and a Social Work student.
She explained how the unit operates as a student-led initiative, its collaborations, volunteer
activities, and the significance of student involvement in palliative care.
2. Welcome Address
The welcome address was given by
Ms. Jumana Shameer, Convener of Smriti Malayali Fraternity.
She warmly welcomed the dignitaries, speakers, faculty members, and students, setting the tone
for the day’s sessions.
3. Inauguration
The programme was formally inaugurated by
Dr. Ravindra Ramesh Patel, Head of the Department of Social Work, Jamia Millia Islamia.
He shared brief insights and appreciated the initiative taken by the student unit in addressing the
sensitive and crucial area of palliative care.
Technical Sessions
4. Session I — Hospice & End-of-Life Care
The first session was taken by
Sr. Tabitha, In-charge, Society of the Sisters of the Holy Cross, Shanti Avedna Sadan Cancer
Institute, Delhi.
She spoke about hospice care, its philosophy, the role of compassion, and the importance of
providing dignity and comfort during end-of-life stages.
5. Session II — Cancer Awareness
The second session was led by
Dr. Muhammad Sheedh, Clinical Oncologist, Department of Oncology, Batra Cancer Centre,
Delhi.
He delivered a detailed presentation on cancer awareness, causes, symptoms, myths, scientific
understanding, and preventive measures.
His session included scientific facts explained in a clear and accessible manner, helping students
understand the seriousness and complexity of cancer-related issues.
6. Session III — Understanding Palliative Care
The final session was conducted by
Mr. K. V. Hamza, General Secretary, DNipCare Delhi.
He spoke about the importance of palliative care, DNipCare’s services such as home visits,
community-based support, and the role of volunteers in improving the quality of life of patients.
His session emphasized compassion, community responsibility, and the value of psychosocial
support.
Vote of Thanks
The programme concluded with a sincere Vote of Thanks delivered by
Ms. Rushda, Programme Convener.
She expressed gratitude to all the speakers, faculty members, volunteers, and participants for
contributing to the program’s success.
Conclusion
The event successfully fulfilled its objective of spreading awareness about palliative care, cancer
understanding, hospice services, and the importance of community involvement. The sessions
provided meaningful insights, strengthened student motivation, and encouraged compassionate
engagement in social and healthcare-related fields.

സ്മൃതി പാലിയേറ്റീവ് കെയർ കോഓർഡിനേറ്റർ സിയാനയുടെ യൂണിറ്റിന്റെ പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങളെ കുറിച്ചുള്ള വിശദമായ വിവരണത്തോടെ പരിപാടി ആരംഭിച്ചു.
സ്മൃതി മലയാളി കൂട്ടായ്മയുടെ കൺവീനർ ജുമാന ഷമീർ സ്വാഗത പ്രഭാഷണം നടത്തി.
ജാമിയ മിലിയ ഇസ്ലാമിയ സോഷ്യൽ വർക്ക് ഡിപാർട്ട്മെൻറ് ഹെഡ് Dr. രവീന്ദ്ര രമേഷ് പട്ടേൽ പരിപാടി ഉദ്ഘാടനം ചെയ്തും, വിദ്യാർത്ഥികളുടെ പരിശ്രമത്തിനെ അഭിനന്ദിച്ചും സംസാരിച്ചു.
സൊസൈറ്റി ഓഫ് ദ സിസ്റ്റേഴ്സ് ഓഫ് ദ ഹോളി ക്രോസ്, ശാന്തി അവേദന സദൻ, ഡൽഹിയിലെ സിസ്റ്റർ തബിദ ഹോസ്പൈസ് കെയർ ( Hospice care) നെ കുറിച്ചും, അതിന്റെ പ്രാധാന്യത്തെ കുറിച്ചും സംസാരിച്ചു.
ഡൽഹി Batra ഹോസ്പിറ്റലിലെ കാൻസർ വിഭാഗം വിദഗ്ദൻ Dr. മുഹമ്മദ് ഷീദ് വിശദമായി ക്യാൻസർ, അതിന്റെ ലക്ഷണങ്ങൾ, കാരണങ്ങൾ എന്നിവയെ കുറിച്ചും കൃത്യമായി വിദ്യാർത്ഥികൾക്ക് ബോധവൽക്കരണം നൽകി.
പാലിയേറ്റീവ് കെയർ നെ മനസിലാക്കാം എന്ന വിഷയത്തിൽ DNipCare ജനറൽ സെക്രട്ടറി Mr. K.V Hamza സംവദിച്ചു. പാലിയേറ്റീവ് രംഗത്ത് വിദ്യാർത്ഥികളുടെ ഉത്തരവാദിത്തതേക്കുറിച്ചും, സാമൂഹിക- മാനസിക പിന്തുണയുടെ പ്രാധാന്യത്തെ കുറിച്ചും അദ്ദേഹം സംസാരിച്ചു.
സ്മൃതി പ്രോഗ്രാം കൺവീനർ റുഷ്ദയുടെ നന്ദിയോടെ പരിപാടി അവസാനിച്ചു.
പരിപാടിയിലുടനീളം വിദ്യാർത്ഥികളുടെ ആശയപരമായ ഇടപെടലുകളും, സജീവ പങ്കാളിത്തവും ശ്രദ്ധേയമായിരുന്നു.
