Delhi State Cancer Institute - A Delhi Model for States to follow....

"It is very sad to hear about the death of a Cancer patient on the Radiotherapy couch in Alappuzha Medical College. Kerala has gone far ahead of other Indian States in all health indices, but this kind of bizarre incident highlights the necessity of further exposure requirement to both bureaucratic as well as political authorities. Using the obsolete cobalt machines for radio therapy while the private institutions are able to afford linear accelerators is really a pathetic situation.

In this scenario, it will be an eye opening for Kerala Health authorities including people’s representatives if they pay a visit to the Delhi State Cancer Institute under Delhi Government, which proved its mettle not only in super specialty treatment protocols without even user fee or out of pocket expenditure for the patients, but also hospital maintenance with state of the art technology better than any corporate hospital in the National Capital Territory of Delhi. Despite caring more than 1200 patients per day in OPD, it is the only respite for the poor patients from all adjacent States of the National Capital as well as from far flung places of Bihar, Orissa, West Bengal and even Nepal."

Palliative Care, Need of the Hour

Here is a parent from Agra in Uttar Pradesh, requesting the mercy of President of India for mercy killing or euthanasia of his 6 children suffering from Canavan, the rare neurological disease/disorder.  Affluent individuals, institutions, leaders, political systems, everything is in place, but none there to provide succor to this family so as to wipe their tears and take away their lament?  Community based Voluntary Palliative Care comprising emotional, social and medical interventions to improve the quality of life of these children, is the only solution seems to be appropriate in this scenario when the disease is beyond cure in medical science.
Canavan disease is a progressive, fatal neurological disorder that begins in infancy. It is caused by an inherited genetic abnormality: the lack of an essential enzyme causes deterioration of the white matter (myelin) in the brain, thereby preventing the proper transmission of nerve signals.

Symptoms of Canavan disease vary, but generally include rapidly increasing head circumference, lack of head control, reduced visual responsiveness and abnormal muscle tone such as stiffness or floppiness.  Children with Canavan disease cannot crawl, walk, sit or talk.  Over time they may suffer seizures, become paralyzed, developmentally delayed or blind and have trouble swallowing. Deafness may also result……
