Strange city, disease and illnesses altogether mar the cancer patients from far flung villages of adjacent States of Delhi. Prolonged treatment compels them to remain in the city under the roof of Dharmashalas of hospitals if they can afford to, else resort to staying in open bearing the brunt of scorching heat and dust storms.
It is a real ray of hope for them if someone even ask about their situation. The volunteers of DNipCare, the Palliative Care initiative in Delhi since 2008, comprising working professionals, students, homemakers etc., thus, made it a point to visit such suffering patients and their bystanders in Delhi State Cancer Institute and its Dharmashala on a weekly basis way back from 2011, taking care of their not only social support, blood requirements etc., but also emotional and even cultural essentials by arranging the fairs and festivals. Altruistic Food Sharing was one such attempt on the occasion of Ramzan wherein the volunteers had their fast breaking with all the patients and bystanders.
Patients belonging to the far flung areas in the States of North & Eastern India with their bystanders participated in the program along with the volunteers of DNipCare from different walks of life.
The patients living far away from their natives, near and dear felt nostalgic while participating in the community iftar arranged by DNipCare. The volunteers also had the experience of empathetically sharing and caring through this program.
In addition to DNipCare Volunteers, the Volunteers of KMWA-HCW also actively participated in organizing the event and making it a grand success as the occasion brought back a smile of contention on the faces of suffering patients for whom the festivals and festivities are otherwise taboo when reeling under pain and related sufferings of the disease.
