Vipin Kumar of Ramgarhi in Bulandshahar, Uttar Pradesh, fondly
called as Vipin is a name familiar among all the volunteers of our Palliative
Care under DNipCare as many of them met him, interacted, befriended and cared this
merely 20 years old boy who was suffering from Ewing’s Sarcoma. The first bed in the ground floor hall dormitory
of Sir Soba Singh Dharamshala of Delhi State Cancer Institute was always had
Mr. Vipin as its occupant with a wryly smile on his face to the visitors. Even while undergoing the perils of Chemotherapy
and Radio therapy he loved to read anything and everything to forget his
worries though he could not complete his schooling beyond 11th
standard due to spread of the disease. Student
volunteers were therefore very much fond of him and used to give him books and
reading materials.
Hip amputation from
AIIMS in July 2013 to contain the tentacles of the Cancer Crab, which made a
big lump on his left thigh, was a turning point in his life as management of
the large amputation wound was in the hands of DNipCare nursing volunteers as
Vipin was discharged from the hospital on the very next week of
amputation. The experience of a patient
instructing the carers used to be not only a novel experience to all those well
qualified and experienced nurses from premier medical institutes, but also the
beginning of a friendship bond for them with this boy. Suresh Thaliyaril, Abdul Latheef, Lijin Raj, Shoukath,
Justin G, Binnu, Fameer, Shyju CV, Ajith Mohan, Jinesh, Jafer, Linesh, Shabeer
Ali, Shilpa Babu, Caroline Arthur etc., to name a few were always there to
attend to him when he was in Dharamshala of AIIMS, Hospice Centre of CanKids
and Dharamshala of DSCI. The nursing
staff of CanSupport was also there to provide him nursing care from their
outlet in Dilshad Garden. Even after losing
one leg, Vipin struggled and fought with the disease to the maximum, but
finally succumbed to the destiny and left us all at 12.30 AM on 1st
January 2014 when the entire world was celebrating the arrival of New Year.
Let us pray for the departed soul to rest in peace. Let us also pray for providing adequate
strength to his bereaved family including his parents to cope up with the loss
of their young boy.
